Why is sitting all day bad for you?

Most of the people today, from school kids to working adults, are spending the majority of their time sitting (and staring at screens). According to some research, in the last 150 years we have gone from standing or walking 90% of our time, to sitting 60% of the time. It’s safe to say that our ancestors would probably be very unhappy with our modern sedentary lifestyle. Include fast food and stress into the equation and you end up with some very disturbing predictions of our future health.

The studies showed sedentary behavior can lead to death from cardiovascular issues and cancer as well as cause chronic conditions such as Type 2 diabetes. Physical inactivity has been identified as the fourth-leading risk factor of death for people all around the world, according to the World Health Organization. Prolonged sitting - meaning sitting for eight to 12 hours or more a day - increases your risk of developing type 2 diabetes by 90%.

So, we all know that sitting all day is bad for us. But what can we do about it?!

Killerspin has come to a simple solution: #UnPlugNPlay. What does that mean?

UnPlug – take your eyes off the screens and your mind off all the emails, social networks and disturbing news.

Play – spend just 15 minutes of your busy day playing table tennis. Get up, stand up, grab that paddleand move – your body and mind will be grateful for that. Besides, table tennis is a great game for improving your hand-eye coordination and overall health condition. Plus: everyone can play it!

When you feel tired, washed-out and completely out of focus, that means your body is trying to tell you something. It usually means that you need to take a break. Instead of using that break to run off to the nearest fast food restaurant or scroll endlessly through your Facebook timeline, stop reading this blog and go  #UnPlugNPlay.
