As we say goodbye to 2016. we wanted to introduce you to our newest member of the Killerspin family – Felipe Morita. We are very proud that we have with us a person whose name is known in table tennis world and who will help us achieve great things in the future for table tennis enthusiasts.
He has agreed to share his experience and expectations for 2017.
Q: Can you tell us a little bit about yourself and how you started playing table tennis?
A: My name is Felipe Morita I am a 29-year-old from Brazil. I am also a table tennis player and coach. I just finished my MBA in Marketing at Lindenwood University in St Louis. I’m a major sports enthusiast, especially soccer and table tennis.
I started table tennis when I was nine, playing at my apartment but then I won a tournament that my dad organized with young kids in my neighborhood. I got excited about the sport so my dad took me to a vey good table tennis club where I started playing almost every day. After a couple of years, I was one of the best players Under 13 in Brazil. I have been part of the Brazilian national team Under-15 and Under-18. I won several titles, including the Brazilian National Championship and Latin American Championship (U-15 and U-18).
I stopped playing table tennis when I started college in order to focus on my studies. I stayed away from the sport for about 7 years and then my friends who studied in the US encouraged me to start studying English and playing table tennis again. I applied to Lindenwood University in St Louis and I was accepted. I got a full ride to the school to play table tennis for them. After playing for my university I realized that I am still passionate about the sport and that it is something that I want to be involved in for the rest of my life.
Q: Any funny anecdotes you would like to share from your table tennis career?
A: I can’t remember a very funny one but when I was young, around 11 or 12 years old, I used to cry and I was such a spoiled kid. l used to break the paddles after losing a match. Hopefully, I learned how to be a good kid after my coaches and parents disciplined me so many times.
Q: What are your favorite table tennis events all year around?
A: I enjoy watching the Pro Tours events and World Table Tennis Championships. This year the Olympics were in my country and I tried to watch as many table tennis matches I could.
Q: What do you think about the current state in table tennis and what do you think should be done in order to make the game more popular?
A: I believe table tennis is growing in several countries. It is becoming more popular in offices, parks, clubs etc. I believe it is not as popular as other sports such as soccer, tennis, volleyball, because table tennis does not get a lot of support from the government and sports officials do not care much about making table tennis more popular either. In addition, the table tennis today is not very attractive to watch because the rallies do not last long and beginners who don’t understand how much spin, technique, and strategy are involved in table tennis, find it boring to watch. One simple solution such as making the net higher would make the rallies last longer and consequently, it would make it more attractive to watch.
Q: Which of your table tennis achievements have given you the most pleasure?
A: I believe in 2002 when I won the National Championship of Brazil, and the Latin American Championship, and was also voted the best cadet player of the year winning a beautiful award during the CBTM (Brazilian Confederation of Table Tennis) ceremony.
Q: Finally, can you give us an insight into current Killerspin House activities?
A: After December 1st we started the Killerspin Concierge Member program and so far it is working very well. We have around forty members that come on regular basis to Killerspin House to take classes and have fun with other Concierge Members.
Additionally, we have been hosting corporate events. All the companies so far loved them and it is due to the cooperation of our staff and the new packages the we are offering with the UnPlugNPlay paddles. We believe that 2017 is going to be a great year for Killerspin.
